GAME ANGLING

2012 - EYEBROOK RESERVOIR 27th September

A low pressure system that produced extreme flooding in the Northern half of the country made the fishing very dour, high winds also coloured the water.

The match day started with light winds and bright sunshine, in fact most of the day was spent without use of drogues. Fish were scattered across the reservoir in the top two feet of water but not visibly feeding so it was a case of keep moving until you found an obliging fish. My boat partner, Jim Campbell (SC B), caught on a bead head damsel fly with a palmered body and he sportingly gave me one, which produced my one and only fish. My thanks to Jim for his excellent company and generous spirit.

Heard in the bar that evening.

- Jim Venning (NI) had to wait four hours for his first fish,

- Nigel Evans (SW) demonstrated the alternative catch and release when his fish jumped out of his net and over the side of the boat whilst he was trying to adminster last rites,

- Neil Dunster (N) kept advising his team mate that he was catching on daddies but neglected to mention that they had a gold head,

- Iain Rickerby (E) attempted to turn his boat partner into a fly Christmas tree, then had an attempt at spear fishing when the top section of his rod came off before finally sacrificing his line to the propellor!

Top three individual anglers were Jim Venning (NI) - 6 fish for 14lbs 7ozs, Phil Spence (NI) - 5 fish for 13lbs 8ozs and Phil Coulthard (NW) - 6 fish for 11lbs 4ozs.

Heaviest fish was a Brown of 5lbs 8ozs for Phil Spence (NI) and the heaviest Rainbow was 4lbs 3ozs for Jim Venning (NI).

Also we must thank the management of Eyebrook who kindly put up three boat vouchers/two fishing tickets to be given out as prizes.

Finally should you be fortunate enough to qualify next year please remember to report to the weigh in station, even if you have not caught anything. Please note that this not a one day event, you are expected to stay the night before the final, fish the match and attend the presentation meal. If you cannot commit yourself to the full agenda then let your regional organiser know as soon as possible so that he can get a reserve.

Also I recommend that you arrange to have at least one practice session on the day prior to the final. You are representing your region and it is your responsibility to try as hard as possible.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach the hotel.

Just a final note on paperwork. I know it is a lot to read, I have just finished doing 2013's and it runs to eight pages, but a lot of effort goes into it to provide all the important information competitors will need. Reading it would have saved one of this years finalists from sleeping in his car the first night!!
