GAME ANGLING

2013 - DRAYCOTE WATER 13th June

The forecast for the final on the Wednesday was not looking favourable, at the very least it seemed part of the water would be out of bounds. However on the day the whole water was available but most people opted for Rainbow Corner and the dam wall for cover from the strong Westerly wind. Drifting out towards the middle got progressively lumpier but was still fishable. However around 3pm the skies darkened and a force seven squall came through with torrential rain. Just about to motor back for another drift my boat partner and I agreed that to return to harbour was safest but when we arrived the pontoons were bouncing about with waves breaking over them making landing a nightmare. The nice cup of coffee helped restore spirits and we were soon back out fishing. Some people opted to ride it out whilst at least one pair beached their boat and sheltered in the trees. Despite this everyone enjoyed themselves and all caught fish, which is the first time this has happened in the last five years.

Once again the South East region were unable to field a team. Come on lads, there must be fly fishermen in your region.

We would like to thank the fishery management for their support of this event and particularly fishery manager Craig Barr for his sponsorship where he not only provided three free flies (orange booby, diawl bach and crisp packet buzzer) which were all relevant for the water and time of year but he has also provided us with a special code to enable members to get 20% off their orders from his fly company www.flashattackflies.com. I will be advertising this as soon as Craig has had a chance to test that it works on his system.

As this was the twenty-fifth anniversary of this competition each competitor was presented with an Airflo Competitor Double Foam Slot Fly Box engraved for the occasion and very well they were received.

Should you be fortunate enough to qualify next year please remember to report to the weigh in station, even if you have not caught anything. Please note that this not a one day event, you are expected to stay the night before the final, fish the match and attend the presentation meal. If you cannot commit yourself to the full agenda then let your regional organiser know as soon as possible so that he can replace you with a reserve.

Also I recommend that you arrange to have at least one practice session on the day prior to the final. You are representing your region and it is your responsibility to try as hard as possible.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach the hotel.
