BOAT ANGLING

2011 Report - Thursday 7th July, Poole.

You can organise the boats. You can organise the accommodation. You can organise the competitors. But the one thing you can never organise is the fish! Plus, horror of horrors, the day before the event I received a call to say that one of the boats had broken down and would not be available. Many thanks to Andy Cumming (skipper of Silver Spray) for arranging a replacement at such short notice.

Anglers fishing the day before had found some nice rays despite the poor weather and everything looked good for the day of the final. But as ever it didn't turn out as expected. The weather had improved slightly and plenty of fish were caught, just nothing very big. Total catch was three hundred and thirty-five fish from thirteen species and mini species. Crimson Tide 75 fish, True Blue 107 fish and rapid Fisher 153 fish.

This year because of the size of the fishing fleet at Poole we booked three big catamarans as in previous years there had been murmurings about the unfairness of using four boats. With three we could now have each boat as a zone and the skippers were free to fish wherever they liked.

As you can see all the results are listed below but special note should go to Mitch Johnson (Midlands) 47 points who did very well to beat England international Mike Patten (South West) 43 points in the individual placings and John Wright (Southern) 41 points also did well to come third in his first final. Gordon McCain (London) 41 points in fourth place is waiting his moment to step up into the medals.

The South West region (Mike Patten, Steve harries and Tony Hiscock) were very worthy winners with seven points, which was five points clear of second placed team Southern region (Peter Holt, John Wright and Gavin Thompson) and six points clear of third placed Midlands region (Mitch Johnson, Roger Lovell and Dave Hutchings).

I have to admit to a very slight error (my fault) in working out the results in that we calculated placings on points first rather than number of species. Luckily it made very little difference to the results other than to place Yorkshire last as they tied with the South East on points but had fewer species. Also on Crimson Tide Ray Martin (Eastern) was second and not Steve Harries (South West) because although they tied on points Ray had two more species, that will cost me a few pints!!

Many thanks to Steve Porter (skipper of True Blue) and Paul Smith (skipper of Rapid Fisher) who joined us for the presentation dinner and  presented the prizes.

The 2012 final is at Milford Haven on the 12th July.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach the hotel.

Whilst competing in the national finals on special leave you are deemed to be at work and are governed by normal Civil Service rules, as such you are expected to turn up at the boats to compete, occupy the room allocated to you and attend the presentation meal. Failure to comply with this timetable could cause you to be charged for unoccupancy of rooms, charged for an evening meal and may lead to disciplinary action by the Civil Service Sports Council or your employer.
