Shore Angling
2008
This year's final was fished at Morriscastle Strand, Kilmuckridge, Co.
Wexford, Eire on Thursday 15th May.
Match day dawned with bright sunshine and a NE force 4-5 wind, which with
the strand facing east was going to give our finalists problems, plus it
had been the same for several days. Teams that practised on the previous
day had found, as predicted, there were dogfish at range and flounders
close in with a small mixture of other species thrown in, but would they
still be there today? Signs were that things were going to be a little
harder today.
Despite the conditions there were lots of fish around but many were
under our eighteen centimetre size limit.
In total there were 176 fish caught (measured and returned) which
consisted of 109 flounders, 28 dabs, 22 dogfish, 6 bass, 5 turbot, 2
rockling, 1 smoothound, 1 whiting, 1 tub gurnard and 1 eel.
Winning team were Scotland on 12 points (1st, 4th and 7th) closely
followed by the South East with 14 points (3rd, 5th and 6th) and third
place were Northern with 15 points (2nd, 6th and 7th).
Top individual was big hitter Iain Graham (Sc) in zone B who went to
distance and managed eleven dogfish in his bag of 537 points, which
included a double hit on the last cast of the day! It is no good being a
big caster if you don't known how to fish in differing conditions and by
using a heavier lead and a lower trajectory Iain was able to punch his
baits below the wind and whilst not able to reach maximum range he
certainly found the kennel on that beach! David Craig (NI) fished close in
for a magnificent catch of twenty flounders for 428 points in zone C
whilst again in zone B newly capped England boat international Mike Patten
(SW) landed seven dogfish, a whiting, a flounder, a dab and a gurnard for
408 points.
Dave Bentley (L) had a taste of what fishing in Ireland is all about when
he landed a superb sixty-three centimetre bass, he got even more pleasure by
seeing it swim away safely!
As this year is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the angling council we
decided to make the first final of the year a spectacular one. Firstly was
the choice of venue and the south
east corner of Eire was chosen for it's excellent fishing and the
quality of the craic, as they say! Secondly we purchased pint glasses and
had them engraved to commemorate the event and these were placed at each
sitting for the presentation dinner, unfilled unfortunately! And thirdly
rather than medals we also purchased cut crystal tumblers and had them
similarly engraved.
As additional expense was involved to get to the venue we attempted to get
some sponsorship and would like to thank Stena Ferries for their
assistance and Courtown Harbour Sea Angling Centre (tel: 087 6613145 or
086 1017466) who jumped in at the last minute and provided £250 of prize
vouchers when another local tackle shop let us down. Co-owner Joe Byrne
even attended the meal on the Thursday and presented the prizes. A big
thank you also goes to Graham Bell and all his staff at Sean
Og's Hotel & Holiday Cottages (Tel: 053 9130982) who looked after
us so well that several regions are already planning a return trip.
2009
Next year's final will be fished in North Wales Sept/Oct, venue to be
decided.
Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a
year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know
will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a
family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach
the hotel.
