Shore Angling

2010 - Bridlington

Looking out of my second floor bedroom window at The Expanse Hotel I could see gentle waves breaking along the whole of the match length. The weather whilst we were there was pretty mild for the time of year with a mixture of sunshine, light rain and light winds. Unfortunately no storms had stirred up the sea prior to our arrival and the match looked like being a bit of a grueller.

On Wednesday evening the captains drew a position number and allocated team members to that peg in each of the three zones. Zone A was the northern most zone and was shallower than the other two .Peg 11 was right by a very fishy looking sewer pipe. Zone B, slightly deeper than A, started at the sewer pipe and zone C, the deepest section, was directly after B. Best pegs appeared to be 1 & 11 as both provided a clear end peg and proximity to the sewer pipe.

Start time was three hours before high water and announced by a blast on a fog horn. Base camps were set up at the top of the beach but rods and tripods had to be carried fifty yards down the beach to the waters edge and we then proceeded to reverse up the beach as the tide made. Peter Smalls (Sc) made a cracking start with a flounder first cast and over the next two hours several more fish were caught but it wasn't very hectic unless your name was Alan Uden (SE) who had twelve fish or so before high water. The reason for this was that he was the only person to have any harbour ragworm (muddies, maddies, creeper, etc) and he used then to very good effect.

The tide reached high water and nothing much changed apart from it starting to rain. The odd fish was being caught but everyone were pinning their hopes on the whiting appearing after dark but unfortunately they never appeared and it was a very soggy end to the match three hours after high water.

Remember I said pegs 1 & 11 looked promising? The team winners South East drew peg 1!

Team
1st     South East
2nd    Northern
3rd    Yorkshire

Yorkshire were very unfortunate to loose out on second place as they had drawn on points with the Northern region and it came down to the length of the second longest fish to decide places.

Individual
1st     Alan Uden (SE)        395 points
2nd    Alan O'Neill (N)      213
3rd    Shaun Manning (SE) 207

Despite the poor fishing it was a very pleasant venue and one I look forward to returning to. The hotel was comfortable and right on top of the venue and the staff made us feel very welcome.

Our thanks go to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council who provided free car parking tickets for our stay and North Bay Angling for donating tackle for the prize giving.

Next year's final will be fished at Orford Island, Suffolk on 10th November.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach the hotel.
