2019 Report - Thursday 11th July, Poole. 

Report from Tony Hiscock, steward aboard Silver Spray

The day started calm and bright with the boats heading out of the large expanse of Poole Harbour to try and find some mackerel for bait. We stopped along with the other two boats about half a mile off Old Harry Rocks. After a couple of drifts and only 8 mackerel to show for the crew’s efforts Andy, the skipper, decided on getting the anchor down with the target species being rays.

Unfortunately nobody told the resident ray population and after a good part of the first hour only one undulate ray had been caught. The skipper eased us back towards some rocky ground and a few small fish started show. Namely minute pout and slightly bigger bream with the odd wrasse.

Our next move was off the cliffs in Swanage Bay where a few more varieties put in an appearance followed by a run back to Poole Patch where bream, pout and wrasse were taken. Once a reasonable number had been caught the skipper followed the other boats over towards Boscombe where we drifted close to the beach for place and gurnards. This was our most successful move and, although hampered by an increasing breeze, several drifts accounted for 30 plaice with a handful of tub gurnards.

A last couple of short stops outside the chain ferry and inside the harbour until "time’s up" amounted to very little and we made our way back to port.

The skipper worked hard for the anglers on board this stable and roomy vessel and did his best to get among the fish. Thank you Andy.

On a personal note I would like to thank the anglers aboard for making my task easy with nothing of a contentious nature for me to deal with. Thank you.

A note for future competitors. Do your homework and find out what is likely to be caught and how to catch them. Equip yourselves with the appropriate terminal tackle and bait for the task which may well be totally alien to what is normal in your own areas. You will have a better day.

The 2020 final is at Milford Haven on the 3rd July.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach the hotel.

There is more to preparation for these finals than sorting out your tackle and ordering bait. Unless you know who you will be sharing a room with get yourself a decent pair of earplugs just in case! Despite forecasts the weather is very changeable so bring seasickness tablets even if you have never been sick before and take them the the night before! 

Drinking alcohol during a competition is not an advised action. You should bear in mind your responsibilities to your team mates and fellow competitors. 

 Whilst competing in the national finals on special leave you are deemed to be at work and are governed by normal Civil Service rules, as such you are expected to turn up at the boats to compete, occupy the room allocated to you and attend the presentation meal. Failure to comply with this timetable could cause you to be charged for unoccupancy of rooms, charged for an evening meal and may lead to disciplinary action by the Civil Service Sports Council or your employer. This also applies if you are retired as you are representing the CSSC.
