BOAT ANGLING
2021 Report - Milford Haven 2nd July
Report by Bob Poole -
Thirty sea anglers turned up at the Beggars Reach hotel in bright
sunshine to contest the sea boat fishing final at Pembroke. Those who had been
at the venue previously were amazed as they had never seen blue sky at
Pembroke.
The following day, again in bright sunshine the early arrivals at the quayside
were greeted by the sight of the Midlands team doing their version of the
Hakka to the theme tune of top gun. Time would tell if this piece of lunacy
would prove beneficial.
Boats were loaded and set off at various speeds to the fishing grounds around
the islands. All the boats started drifting the reefs where numbers of large
ballan wrasse and occasional pollack were the main catch. The fishing was
steady for all boats as were the tackle losses on the rocky grounds.
The next move was to anchor on sandy ground where the main targets were
dogfish, dabs, gurnard and rays. Unfortunately the rays decided not to play,
this may have been due to the strong tide which needed 1lb of lead to hold
bottom. There was little tackle loss here but tangles were more prevalent.
But it wasn't just about the fishing, the scenery was brilliant and the
birdlife was off the scale with puffins and guillemots everywhere. There was a
porpoise and for one boat the sight of a beast of a dog seal wrestling with an
enormous ray. No cute and cuddly in evidence there!
The next move was to anchor on rough ground. Unfortunately during the
move one of the boats picked up a length of rope around it's prop, thus
reducing it to one engine.
A mix of fish were available on this ground with huss, wrasse, pollack,
poor cod and pouting being the main targets. Sandeels were also in evidence.
Some of the better fish were caught on this ground with at least one double
figure huss coming over the side.
Some of the boats made a last move to either drift or re-anchor. Unfortunately
the partially crippled boat didn't have that option.
Once each boat's six hour allocation was up it was the long steam back to the
quayside. It was an even longer steam for the one engine boat which meant a
lot less time for the organisers to collate the results. Each fish is
allocated points which vary according to species. Additional points are given
for numbers of species. This is good for the fish as they go back alive, but
not so good for the organisers who have to decipher the various squiggles
marked on a sheet.
Overall Pembroke did us proud with some exciting and challenging fishing,
lovely weather together with some great laughs.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year
in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will
be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a
family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach
the hotel.
There is more to preparation for these finals than sorting out your tackle
and ordering bait. Unless you know who you will be sharing a room with get
yourself a decent pair of earplugs just in case! Despite forecasts the
weather is very changeable so bring seasickness tablets even if you have
never been sick before and take them the the night before!
Drinking alcohol during a competition is not an advised action. You should
bear in mind your responsibilities to your team mates and fellow
competitors.
Whilst competing in the national finals on special leave you are deemed to be at work and
are governed by normal Civil Service rules, as such you are expected to
turn up at the boats to compete, occupy the room allocated to you and
attend the presentation meal. Failure to comply with this timetable could
cause you to be charged for non occupancy of rooms, charged for evening
meals and may lead to disciplinary action by the Civil Service Sports
Council or your employer. This also applies if you are retired as you
are representing the CSSC.
