2017 - Thursday 12th October - Holyhead breakwater

Mother nature can be fickle even at the best of times. At Holyhead this year she proved to be no different! The day before the final the H&S inspection of the venue was undertaken in 35mph winds. However, the forecast of much lighter and fine weather winds promised an exciting match. The venue was judged as ‘rough ground’ and the competitors had been advised that significant tackle losses could be potentially expected. Definitely not a sandy beach match this time! The prime targets for the anglers would be Dogfish at distance, Pouting and Wrasse with the potential of a larger Bull Huss in the offing.

Match day revealed lighter winds, initially, but also the addition of a string of pots and their buoys, limiting casting to less than 100mtrs in places. Just to add an extra dimension, a very large seal regularly patrolled the area. Good start to the day!

Well the prediction of tackle losses were absolutely spot on and a steady stream of re-rigging ensued. However, at the end peg a triple shot of dogfish first cast proved to be an indication for one angler of the potential available. Over the next hour or so the tide strength gradually increased, in conjunction with the wind strength which by now had doubled, requiring anglers to re-consider the options, some reducing distance and finding wrasse closer to the breakwater. News of larger Bull Huss being caught filtered out along the zones, together with mutterings about the tackle graveyard! Well, it was the same for all and those who had prepared best reaped the benefits of their labours. As the match progressed the early steady steam of dogfish slowed and wrasse dominated the score cards.

Anglers lost various items to the wind, including a pair of waterproof leggings, bait elastic containers, hand cloths and score cards! Bites were difficult to identify and ensuring kit was secure dominated anglers considerations (along with getting the next rig or rotten bottom ready!). By match end almost all were pleased to pack up and trudge their weary, long way back to the car park and protection from the elements, with the promise of a small libation back at the hotel prior to the presentation meal.

The word for the day was definitely challenging. Completely different fishing to the normal for some, but never the less an experience! Well done to all for toughing it out!!

The breakwater provided a safe venue and our thanks go to Stena Line, the owners, who provided the key to the main gate. to enable competitors to drive either onto the breakwater or to the start of it.

A special thanks to all of the staff at the Anglesey Bait Centre who offered assistance and support, information and suggestions to help those who asked about Holyhead. Not only that but absolutely excellent prices for their tackle as well!.

RESULTS

TEAM
Scoring is total number of position points, where first in zone gets one point and last a possible eleven, ie. three zone wins would give a team total of 3. If a team has only two members then they will be credited 12 points for the missing team member. No fish caught gets that competitor twelve points.
